The fonds consists of a register of marriages in Alnwick Township and its environs, including Alderville, and the Townships of Haldimand and Hamilton, for the years 1858-1864, 1867, 1869-1872, and 1875-1882. It includes a copy of the Act to Amend the Laws relating to the Solemnization of Matrimony in Upper Canada, 1857.

Alnwick Township (Ont.) : Alnwick Township, which is bounded on the north by Rice Lake, is one of the northern townships of Northumberland County, Ontario. It was first surveyed in 1826 by [Colonel Birdsall] and spread out initially around the unincorporated village of Four Corners, which was renamed Roseneath by James Campbell, a pioneer settler who came from Roseneath, Scotland, 1838. Apart from the Mississaugas on the Alderville Reserve, most of the early settlers came from Scotland or the north of England.

Township government was established at Alderville, where the first meeting of freeholders was held on 6 January 1845. Monthly meetings were started in 1851 and a town hall was built in 1861. The economy of the township is based on agriculture and tourism.
