Fonds consists of papers which concern many aspects of the Canadian Centenary Council's activities. Included are: correspondence, memoranda, notes by Wallis, reports, minutes and agendas of the council's annual meetings, addresses, printed matter, and clippings.

Wallis, Hugh Macdonell, b. 1893 : Colonel Hugh Macdonell Wallis received his education from the University of Toronto. He served in World War I from 1914-1919 in France, Belgium and Germany, and was awarded the D.S.O., M.C. He was Colonel and Commandant, The Black Watch of Canada 1930-1931, and from 1931 to 1935 served as Honourary Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General. He served in World War II from 1940 to 1946.

He has had a long business association with the Mount Royal Rice Mills Ltd., and served as President and Managing Director from 1924 until 1953. His contribution to the community has been notable including president of the Canadian Citizenship Council 1951-1952, president of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 1957-1964, Chairman of the Provisional Executive of the Canadian Centenary Council, 1959-1961, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Canadian Centenary Commission, 1961-1964.

The Canadian Centenary Council was a private organization formed in 1960 to encourage, undertake and assist Centennial projects and celebrations by acting as a national clearing house and information centre. The papers deal with the preliminary thinking behind the establishment of the Canadian Centenary Council, efforts to provide leadership and financial backing, co-operation with the Government regarding centenial celebrations and the development and implementation of centennial projects by its members.
