Fonds consists of two circular letters to Jewish Canadian troops, and clippings relating to Rabbi Levi's activities as Canadian Jewish chaplain during the Second World War; 5 pages. The circular letters were sample copies sent by Rabbi Levi to his wife, with personal annotations, 5 pages.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting the activities of Rabbi Levi and other Jewish chaplains of the Canadian Army in Britain and Northwest Europe, 1940-1944.

Levi, S. Gershon, 1905-1990 : Rabbi S. Gershon Levi was born in Toronto in 1905 and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1929. In 1932, he received a master's degree in Semitic languages from Columbia University. He was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Manhattan in 1933.

In World War II he was the senior Jewish chaplain of the Canadian armed forces in Europe, rising to the rank of major. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire. From 1946 to 1974, he was rabbi of the Jamaica Jewish Center in Queens. He was a former president of the Rabbinical Assembly, the parent body of Conservative rabbis, a former president of the Rabbinical Assembly and a former editor of the quarterly publication Conservative Judaism. He was also a translator of Yiddish and Hebrew classics, among them ''Gates of Bronze'' by Haim Hazaz (The Jewish Publication Society, 1975). He also translated and edited a two-volume work by Gedaliah Alon, ''The Jews in Their Land in the Talmudic Age'' (Magnes Press of the Hebrew University, 1980 and 1984).

Rabbi Gershon Levi died in 1990 in Jerusalem.
