Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, memorabilia and photographs relating to Brigadier-General Stewart's military career and his participation in the South African and First World War. Subjects and nominal files concern the Canadian Corp's liberation of Mons, Belgium of 11 November 1918 and Stewart's role in this action. Some documentation pertaining to Stewart's posts in the Royal Canadian Artillery and to the Canadian Legion are also included.

The fonds also contains photographs of the mobilization of the 20th and 25th Batteries, Canadian Field Artillery, Calgary, Alberta, 1914; liberation of Mons, Belgium, November 1918; and the pilgrimage of Canadian veterans to Mons, Belgium, November, 1968.

Stewart, John Smith, 1878-1970 : John Smith Stewart was born in Brampton, Ontario and educated at the University of Toronto School of Dentistry. He served as a private in Lord Strathcona's Horse in South Africa, 1900-1901, studied at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, 1907-1908, and was gazetted as Major in the 25th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery (C.F.A.). At the outbreak of the First World War, Smith raised and commanded the 20th Battery, C.F.A., rising to the position of lieutenant-colonel. In January 1916 he undertook command of the 7th Brigade, C.F.A., and later of the 4th Brigade. Smith held the post of Brigadier-General of the 3rd Canadian Division from 1917 until 1919.

J.S. Stewart was active in both provincial and federal politics as a Conservative. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta representing the town of Lethbridge in 1911. He held his seat through the elections of 1913, 1917 and 1921 until his resignation in 1925. At that time he was a candidate for the federal seat of Lethbridge, but was defeated and did not win the seat until 1930. He was defeated in the general elections of 1935 and 1940.

Some of the documents were collected during the First World War while others were obtained through Stewart's long-standing correspondence with Georges Licope, curator of the Mons War Museum.
