Fonds consists of radio scripts of programmes sponsored by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union as part of the drive to organize Eaton's workers in Toronto, n.d., 1950-1951; three reports on the campaign, 1950, 1953, company leaflets distributed by Eaton's to its employees during the organizing campaign; n.d., 1950-1951; and miscellaneous including Union Manual For Department Store Organizing Committees, RWDSU Local 1000 Bylaws, Steward's book, leaflets clippings, and other items, 1949-1953.

Arnold, Ernest F., 1910- : Ernest Arnold, labour leader, was a full-time organizer in the drive to unionize workers at the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. in Toronto, one of the most intensive and sustained organizing campaigns in Canadian labour history. He joined the organizing staff in April 1949, working initially in the Mail Order Department. The Eatons campaign was remarkable in many ways including the number and type of employees involved, the support received from affiliates of the Canadian Congress of Labour, the obstacles encountered in the certification process, and the role of the employer and the press.

The vote for the union was lost by a small margin in 1951 and the concerted campaign to organize the retail industry dwindled thereafter.
