Fonds consists of correspondence, diary and reports, 1914-1972, originals, 20 cm (volume 1); manuscripts including thesis and articles by Dr. Lochhead, originals, 7 cm (volume 2); printed matter 1914-1972, originals, 32 cm (volumes 2-3); memorabilia 1913-1953, originals, 20 cm (volume 4).

The fonds also contains photographs of Ruhleben internment camp, Germany 1914-1918; various aspects of Dr. A.G. Lochhead's career with the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, Ont., 1923-1955; and a composite photo of the graduating class of 1911, McGill University, Montreal, Que.

Lochead, Allan Grant, b. 1890 : Dr. Allan Grant Lochead, bacteriologist, was born at Galt, Ontario. His formal education included the Universities of McGill, Montreal, and Liepzig, Germany. He received his B.A. in 1911, M.Sc. in 1912, and Ph.D. in 1919. He was a student in Germany at the outbreak of World War I and between 1914-1918 was held as a civilian prisoner of war at camp Ruhleben.

He was appointed Dominion Agricultural Bacteriologist in 1923 and retired from his administrative duties as Chief, Division of Bacteriology and Dairy Research, Science Service, Department of Agriculture in 1955 and from public service in 1960. He has authored or co-authored over 80 scientific publications in the field of bacteriology.
