Fonds consists of biographical data, 1888-1953; correspondence with organizations and individuals active in the Ukrainian Canadian community in the first half of the century; correspondence concerning Kiriak's teaching career and the translation of his major work "Syny Zemli", 1914-1955; manuscripts, articles, speeches and reviews, n.d., 1924-1959; and Kiriak estate and miscellaneous documents, n.d., 1941, 1951-1961.

Fonds also contains photographs of the Kiriak family and Alberta, as well as the Centennial Medal, and accompanying certificate, awarded posthumously to the late Illia Kiriak by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, 1991.

Kiriak, Illia, 1888-1955 : Born on May 29, 1888 in Zawalia, Sniatyn country, Galicia (Western Ukraine), Illia Kiriak was a teacher and novelist who immigrated to Canada in December 1906. Various jobs took him across the prairies, to parts of the United States, and to the coal mines of Hosmer, British Columbia, where he eventually came in contact with a group of Ukrainian progressive-radicals who were organized in a branch of the Socialist-Democratic movement. He became secretary of this branch. After being laid-off at the mines, Kiriak worked in the printing shop of the weekly "Nova Hromada" in Edmonton.

In 1913, Kiriak enrolled in the "English School for Foreigners" in Vegreville, Alberta, where he completed his matriculation. He went to Normal School in Camrose, Alberta and taught until 1936 when he was forced to resign due to health reasons. Kiriak then became Executive Secretary of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada, and in the 1940s he served as Rector of M. Hrushewsky Institute (later St. John's Institute) in Edmonton.

Kiriak also wrote poetry, essays and short stories. His first published short story, "Hikyj Son" [Bitter Dream] appeared in "Nova Hromada". From 1922, his writings began to appear in the Winnipeg weekly, "Ukrainian Voice". A number of his short stories on the life of settlers later became part of his monumental novel, "Syny Zemli" [Sons of the Soil], published in three volumes in the years 1939-1945. In 1956, Michael Luchkovich completed an English translation but only an abridged version by Laura Salverson appeared in print in 1959.

Illia Kiriak died on December 28, 1955 in Edmonton, Alberta.
