Fonds consists of the following material: records related to the Valley School of the Arts, a co-operative summer school for children of Strathmere, North Gower, 1957-1970; subject files relating to various organizations with which Sim was involved, 1930-1970; personal correspondence, n.d., 1933-1966; publications and material relating to Sim's Ph.D. thesis and book, 1936-1959; consultant projects, 1962-1974, 1982; and Liaison Division Canadian Citizenship Branch Material, 1952-1964.

The fonds contains photographs depicting the activities of children attending the Valley School of the Arts, including photos by United Press International and Newton Associates, 1957-1966; photos of employees and vehicles of the Arctic Ice Company, Winnipeg, Man., ca. 1896; a group of workers at Hope Farm, owned by the Arctic Ice Company, at St. Jean Baptiste, Man., ca. 1896, photo by Steele and Wing; National Farm Radio Forum Conference in session, Toronto, Ont., 26 May 1947, photo by Canada Pictures (Toronto); and a group photo of National Secretaries of Farm Forum, Toronto, Ont., ca. 1947, photo by R.C. Ragsdale.

The fonds also contains an audio recording documenting an interview of Alex Sim, by Anne Usher and Rosalina Zinman for the Quebec Government Inquiry into Adult Education, 1981.

Sim, Alex, 1911- : Alex Sim, born in Saskatchewan and raised on a farm in Grey County, Ont., attended the Universities of Toronto, Columbia and Michigan State studying sociology, adult education and anthropology. From 1939 to 1947, he was director of Adult Education, Macdonald College, Quebec. He served as assistant professor of sociology at the University of Toronto from 1949 to 1954. He also worked as Chief of the Liaison Division in the Department of Citizenship and Immigration from 1954 to 1963.

Since 1963 he has worked as a consulting sociologist specializing in the fields of community development, adult education and recreation. During his career Alex Sim was active in social innovation and was involved in the founding of student co-operative residences at the University of Toronto, 1937-1938 and Rochdale College, 1964-1965, the National Farm Radio Forum, 1941, and the Rural Adult Education Service, Macdonald College, 1938.
