Fonds consists of correspondence, n.d., 1906-1971; financial material, n.d.; 1942-1939, journals relating to Chadwick's social and cultural activities for most years between 1896 and 1971; notebooks, n.d., 1932-1933, 1942; transcripts, including excerpts from her journals intended for publications, n.d.; scrapbooks 1894-1945; clippings, n.d, 1933-1968; printed material, n.d., 1917, 1962-1969; and miscellaneous items, n.d.

The fonds also contains photographs of Ethel Chadwick, her family and friends; greeting cards illustrated by photos; children at Christmas, 1915; portraits including carte-de-visite by Notman, Topley, and Pittaway, ca. 1890-1969.

Chadwick, Ethel, 1884-1975 : Ethel Chadwick, journalist, was born in Ireland and immigrated to Montreal as a young child. At the age of ten she moved to Ottawa, where her father joined the public service. She began her journal in 1892, recording the Ottawa social life until 1971. She wrote about May Day teas and elegant dances at Rideau Hall, theatre parties at the Russell Theatre, and summers at Murray Bay and Blue Sea Lake in Quebec. Among the people she met and wrote about were Lord and Lady Aberdeen, Sir Wilfrid and Lady Laurier and the Duke and Duchess of Connaught.
