Except for the account of his personal history, much of the draft appears to be similar with some parts of Semmens' book, The Field and the Work, with detailed accounts of Native religion, and encounters with shamans of the Saulteaux, or swampy Cree. The biography also covers his work after 1884, ending in 1913, except for copies of obituary notices in 1921. Two drafts are available, one handwritten ending in 1910, and one edited typescript ending in 1921.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Semmens, John, 1850-1921 : Rev. John Semmens, a Methodist minister, served in Ontario and Manitoba from 1870 to 1905. His first missionary experience with the Cree was at Nelson House, in 1872. He later served at Norway House Mission in 1884, and was Superintendent of the Indian Industrial School at Brandon, 1895. He served at Zion Church in the Winnipeg District Methodist Church, in 1889, and was president of the Manitoba and Northwest Conference of the Methodist Church in 1892.
He published several books and numerous articles including, The Field and the Work: Sketches of Missionary Life in the Far North, 1884, and, The Handbook of Scripture Truths, 1893.
