Collection consists of items related to gliding and soaring in Canada and deals especially with clubs and associations in the immediate Montreal area. Included are club or association constitutions, regulations, minutes, reports, correspondence, financial receipts and reports, flight lists, logs and club publications, and some technical advertising data in the collection.

Photographic material depicts various gliding activities and some R.C.A.F. material.

Technical drawings consists of: 20 plans dealing with the construction of glider and glider trailers by the Schweizer Aircraft Corporation of Elmira, N.Y.; 6 plans of the Kirby Kadet sailplane.

Architectural drawings consist of 3 plans of the Montreal Soaring Council building at Hawkesbury, Ont.

Agnew, John Daniel, 1916-1981 : John Daniel Agnew, glider pilot, was born in 1916 at Montreal, Que., and went to work as an apprentice at Fairchild Aircraft after he completed high school in 1935. He and his brother Arthur founded a gliding club in Montreal and Arthur built and flew gliders intermittenty until 1940, when, because of wartime strictures, the club ceased operations. In 1941 he went to Nova Scotia to work in aircraft plants in Amherst and Dartmouth. In 1944 he returned to Montreal, taking up employment with Canadair where he worked largely in an engineering liaison capacity until his death in 1981.

Once back in Montreal, he resumed gliding with the McGill University Gliding Club in 1944 and was elected by the Air Cadet League of Canada to attend the first gliding instructors' school ever held in Canada, at Carp, Ont. In 1945, he began to reorganize the Montreal Soaring Council of which he was president for its first 15 years. In 1948 he was elected vice-president of the Soaring Association of Canada, and for several years in the 1950's he was Association president. Concurrently, he was active in the Canadair Emoloyees' Recreation Association generally, and particularly in the Canadair Soaring Club.

He held a number of positions with different boards of education including board representative during the 1950's for the North Shore, and school commissioner representing Thorndale Elementary School for the Lakeshore School Board of Beaconsville, Que., representative in the Montreal Island Council, and elected president of the Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards. He was also past president of the Montreal Aeronautical Engineering Association.
