The construction company, Anglin-Norcross Corporation Limited, was formed around 1920 by three men: J.P. Anglin, the senior partner; H.J. Gross, the second partner; and C.D. Harrington, chief engineer. The head office was in Montreal, Quebec. In 1954 controlling interest was bought by the English firm of Holland & Hanmen and Cubbitts Ltd. The company declared bankruptcy in 1967 and was dissolved. At the time of dissolution it was the seventh largest construction company in Canada. The company did some residential construction but was primarily involved in commercial, institutional and industrial projects.
Their major projects included the Royal York Hotel, Toronto; the head offices of the Bank of Toronto and Canadian Bank of Commerce, Toronto; Canada Life Building, Toronto; The T. Eaton Co. Ltd. building, Montreal; Chateau Frontenac Hotel, : Quebec City; and St. Lawrence Sugar Refineries, Montreal. Mr. H.J. Gross had been a partner in the American firm, The Norcross Brothers Company, General Constructors and Builders. Norcross Brothers did work in both Canada and the United States and when the company was dissolved Mr. H.J. Gross moved to Canada and formed Anglin-Norcross.
Mr. Anglin was a graduate architect of McGill University. He had been the chief architect for the Bank of Montreal before he formed a company called Anglin's Ltd. and another, Byer's and Anglin. Subsequently he became a partner in the newly formed Anglin-Norcross with Messrs. Gross and Harrington. For many years Philip Norcross Gross, a graduate engineer of McGill University and son of H.J. Gross, was the president of the company.
