Fonds consists of corporate documents, 1883-1974; photographic material and trade catalogues, [ca. 1885-1971]; financial documents, 1863-1958; proposals and sales, 1885-1966; orders and random project files, 1959-1966; miscellaneous subjects, 1880-1966. The fonds contains photographs showing a boring machine built by McKechnie & Bertram Ltd., Dundas, Ont., [ca. 1863-1870]; munitions production, John Bertram & Sons Ltd., Dundas, Ont., [ca. 1914-1918]; machine tools manufactured by John Bertram & Sons, [ca. 1900-1950]; and a photographic enlargement of a painting of John Bertram. The fonds also contains lithographic prints, a painting, engineering drawings, and shop bills (1917-1954).

John Bertram & Sons : In 1863 John Bertram entered into a partnership with Robert McKechnie under the name of McKechnie & Bertram to produce machine tools in Dundas, Ontario. McKechnie left the partnership in 1886 and the firm became known as John Bertram & Sons. Growth continued into the twentieth century. In 1901, the company was reorganized as John Bertram & Sons Company (Ltd.), the shares being held by the family. In 1905, the Bertram company was purchased by the American machine tool company Niles-Bement-Pond.

During the First World War, the Bertram company was extremely busy building lathes, milling machines and specialized shell making machinery as well as actual munitions production. In 1925 the Bertram family was able to buy out the Niles-Bement-Pond ownership and John Bertram & Sons became an independent company once again. The Second World War brought another period of prosperity and rapid growth during which new buildings and equipment were added to produce regular machine tools. In addition, the company produced specialized equipment for boring field guns.

After the war, John Bertram & Sons made an unsuccessful bid to enter to European market. During the same period, the company built more and more custom-made equipment as well as specialized plastic and steel mill machinery under licensing agreements from other companies. By the 1960s Bertrams were unable to compete with the sophisticated machine tools produced by foreign manufacturers. In 1951 the company was bought by Russell Industries. In 1964 the company was sold to Levy Industries Limited and became known as Bertram Machine and Tool Company. The German heavy engineering company Orenstein & Koppel Canada Limited bought the Bertram shops in 1974. The shops finally closed in the late1980s and the buildings were demolished in 1997.
