This television documentary records a scientific expedition of 1986 during its discovery and photographic examination of the wreck of the Titanic, an ocean liner that sank in the Atlantic on April 14, 1912. Narrative, footage and interviews follow the team, headed by Dr. Robert D. Ballard of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Cape Cod, New England), during its preparations and underwater exploration. In interview segments, Ballard describes the unmanned search system, "Argo", that he developed as part of the U.S. Navy's deep ocean research system. Ballard is also interviewed in excerpts from "Good Morning America" and by Peter Jennings on ABC news. Rear Admiral John B. Mooney, Chief of Research, U.S. Navy; Dudley Foster, "Alvin" submarine pilot; and Martin Bowen, pilot of the robot "Jason Junior", describe the capability of the unmanned system and the problems encountered on the expedition. Footage includes the crew preparing and lowering the unmanned system and photographing, with the aid of "Jason Junior", the remains of the Titanic. Underwater footage includes the exterior, part of the interior and seabed portions of the wreckage, including the area where the grand staircase once stood. A recorded recollection of the event by a former crew member of the Titanic and original music by Ray Swinfield accompany underwater footage. <60mn>
