Fonds contains two diaries and a scrapbook of news clippings which describe the work of Rev. H.C. Schmieder in the Canadian West. Diary entries and the articles recount every day experiences, highlights of his travels to different German Lutheran settlements, social conditions among the settlers, his attempts to organize congregations and to serve the social and spiritual needs of German Lutheran immigrants in the Canadian West.

Schmieder, Heinrich Coelstin, 1863-1955 : Lutheran minister

Heinrich C. Schmieder, the first German Lutheran pastor stationed in Western Canada, was a graduate of Kropp Seminary, Germany, which prepared missionaries for foreign fields. He left for the United States in 1886 to accept a position as pastor with St. Andrews, Lutheran, Pennsylvania. In response to an advertisement by the Canada Synod, he left St. Andrews in 1889 to work as missionary among German Lutheran immigrants who were settling in increasing numbers in the Canadian West.

Initially stationed in Winnipeg, he travelled by train, horse and buggy, or on foot to serve the German Lutheran settlements being formed in southern Manitoba and Assiniboia. In 1890 he transferred his headquarters to Edenwold, Assiniboia, which was more conveniently situated for serving the rapidly growing settlements in that area. He left Edenwold for the United States in 1896 to provide his children with the better educational opportunities available south of the border.
