Fonds consists of four letters to Congressman Millard Fillmore from his brother-in-law, N.K. Hall, 10 January 1840-23 February 1841. The letters deal with legal business and political matters, and mention such public figures as President Harrison, Talmadge, Spencer, Seward, Mosely, Pickens, Dorsheimer and Dr. Foote. There are several comments on the possibility of war with the British and the desirability of driving them from the continent.

Fillmore, Millard, 1800-1874 : Millard Fillmore, President of the United States of America, was born in Locke, N.Y., and admitted to the New York bar in 1823, when he opened his law office in East Aurora. He was a member of the Anti-Masonic Party, and of the New York State legislature, 1828-1830. In 1830, he moved his legal practice to Buffalo, and in 1832, took his former law student Nathan Kelsey Hall (1810-1874) into partnership with him. Hall was later U.S. Postmaster-General during Fillmore's administration, 1850-1852.

Fillmore was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York in the 23rd, and 25th - 27th Congresses, and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the House, 1833-1835, 1837-1941. From 1840 to 1842, he was Comptroller of New York State. In 1849, Fillmore became Vice President. On the death of President Taylor, Fillmore succeeded Taylor as 13th President of the U.S.A., 1850-1853. He lost the whig presidential nomination in 1852, and was an unsuccessful presidential candidate on the Know-Nothing ticket in 1856.
