Fonds consists of the John Bernard "Don" Brophy scrapbook of newspaper clippings, photographs and memorabilia, documenting his athletic and flying activities; personal diaries recording his experiences and thoughts; and a file of miscellaneous items, including his Royal Aero Club certificate. In addition to the original diaries, two typescript copies are available. The diary was reproduced in A Rattle of Pebbles: The First World War Diaries of Two Canadian Airmen (Ottawa: Directorate of History, DND; 1987).

Also included is a photographic portrait of Lieutenant J.B. "Don" Brophy, R.F.C., Birmingham, England. Photograph by Hudson & Co., Birmingham, England.

Brophy, Don, 1893-1916 : John Bernard "Don" Brophy, military aviator, was born and educated in Ottawa. A fine all-round athlete, who distinguished himself in football, hockey, baseball and track and field, he attended McGill University briefly and was subsequently employed by the Department of the Interior.

In September 1915, Brophy was selected as a candidate for the Royal Flying Corps and commenced flying training in October at the Curtiss School at Toronto. In December 1915, he was sent to England where he completed his training.

In May 1916, Lieutenant Brophy was posted to No. 21 Squadron, a general duties squadron with the RFC on the Western Front. During his service, he was mentioned in Despatches after he destroyed one enemy aircraft, and was credited with two "probables" and forced down a fourth aircraft.

In November 1916, he was posted back to England and attached to No. 33 Squadron for home defence duties against Zeppelin raids. He was killed on 24 December 1916 while flight testing his aircraft at Kirton-in-Linsey, England.

A photocopy of one of the two photographs which were transferred to the Documentary Art and Photography Division is available in the papers.
Presented to the Directorate of History, Department of National Defence, in November 1976 by Rita (Brophy) McElroy, sister of John Bernard "Don" Brophy, via L.B. Rochester of Ottawa. Transferred from the Directorate of History to the Archives in November 1980.
