Fonds consists of a completed copy of "The Soldiers' Own Diary" 1918-1919 containing clippings, tickets, and passes, copies of Canadian Pacific Railway and Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Rules and Wages for Telegraphers, 1912, 1913, morse code handbook, two pieces of correspondence, 1918, n.d., and two items of memorabilia.

Also included are photographs of the the G.S. Bennett family and their activities, ca. 1890-1949.

The fonds also contains a collection of postcards, the majority of which show Canadian scenes and include "Scene at Westmount Park, Montreal, Canada," "Mt. McKay and Fort William, Ontario, Canada," "The 1867 Restaurant," "Marshlands Inn, Sackville, N.B.," "La Tour Japonaise Bruxelles-Laeken," "Longest Covered Bridge in the World, Hartland, New Brunkswick."

Bennett, Gordon Stanley : Gordon Stanley Bennett, telegrapher and soldier, is believed to have been born in Carleton Place, Ont. A telegraph operator by trade, he worked with the Canadian government telegraph service and railways at Fort William, Ont., prior to and in the early stages of World War I. He held the rank of lieutenant in the local militia unit. In 1917 he received authority to enlist telegraphers, linemen, electricians, and clerical men for army service, and collected a number of local men and headed to Ottawa for training. In order to ensure his own dispatch overseas he resigned his commission and enlisted as a sapper (private) in the Signal Corps of the Canadian Engineers on 19 May, 1917. He was employed as a wireless operator.

On 20 November, he and some 200 other men left the Signal Training Depot at Lansdowne Park preparatory to heading overseas as part of a draft of reinforcements intended for the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (P.P.C.L.I.) Bennett arrived at the Canadian Engineer Training Centre, Seaford, Sussex, late in 1917. He continued various training courses and did not land in Belgium until 8 November, 1918, three days before the Armistice. He remained on service with the Canadian Corps Signals in Germany, France, and Belgium until his return to England on 14 April 1919. Bennett left England for his return to Canada in 19 May 1919. After the war he worked as a railroad telegraph at Sioux Lookout and Redditt, Ont., 1921-1935, and remained active in the field of railroad communications.
