Collection consists of interviews dealing principally with the organization of railway workers in Canada and with the unification movement, but containing some biographical information. The first interview is conducted by Daniel W. Collins, Assistant General Secretary and Treasurer, United Transportation Union, and the second by Sidney Rosea, Ph.D. student at Cornell University.

Broten, Louis J., 1914- : Louis J. Broten became active in the union movement in the early 1950s as a local official of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen in Edmonton, Alberta.

In 1959 he was elected Canadian member of the International Board of Directors of the Union, a position he held until the 1968 merger with the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen, and the Switchmen's Union of North America. He was the only Canadian on the Brotherhood's Unification Committee that participated in the drawing-up of the terms of the merger. He then became a member of the Board of Appeals for Enginemen of the new United Transportation Union.
