Fonds consists of personal and biographical material, n.d., 1927-1980; correspondence relating to Laidlaw's work in the co-operative movement adult education, university extension and social and community development, n.d., 1944-1980; articles, speeches, lectures and notes by Laidlaw, n.d., 1937-1980; articles, speeches and lectures by others, n.d., 1898-1980; manuscripts and related material for Laidlaw's major works, n.d., 1960-1980; subject files relating to writing and lecturing as well as various projects and organizations, n.d., 1867-1980; miscellaneous clippings and articles, n.d., 1936-1980.

The fonds also contains photographic material depicting various activities of Laidlaw's career including a presentation by Laidlaw to illustrate the history and development of the Co-operative Foundation of Canada, [ca. 1968-1980]; undated photographs of Laidlaw; and group portraits of people, including Laidlaw, involved in various activities related to Laidlaw's career, 1920-1980, including the 27th International Co-Operative Alliance Congress, Moscow, 1980.

The fonds also contains sound recordings of interviews about Moses Coady; radio interviews of Laidlaw; conference proceedings; recorded recollections about the Antigonish movement; and conference speeches by Laidlaw about the co-operative movement, 1966-1980.

Fonds consists of two maps reflecting Dr. Laidlaw's involvement with the co-operative movement as an instructor and executive, on both the local and international level. One map shows co-operative housing developments in Ottawa, Ontario; the other shows rural co-operatives in the Tinsa Valley (somewhere in Africa?). Also included is an atlas of Nova Scotia, where Laidlaw resided for many years.

Laidlaw, Alexander Fraser, 1908-1980 : Alexander F. Laidlaw was born in Port Hood, Cape Breton Island and attended Saint Francis Xavier University. He served as a school principal in Port Hood, 1929-1940; Inspector of Schools, Nova Scotia, 1940-1941; and Secretary of the Department of Education, 1941-1944. In 1944 he returned to St. Francis Xavier as Associate Director of the Extension Department, a position he occupied for the next 12 years. In his work with this department he played an important role in promoting co-operative principles in the Maritimes and throughout the world.

In 1956 he left St. Francis Xavier University to serve for a two-year period as consultant to the Government of India, and the Reserve Bank of India, in the training of personnel for agricultural credit unions and co-operatives. Upon returning to Canada in 1958 he became General Secretary of the Co-operative Union of Canada, and received his D. Ed. from the University of Toronto. Dr. Laidlaw was an executive member of the International Co-operative Alliance and both consultant and instructor for such United Nation agencies as the FAO and ILO.

In 1969 he accepted an appointment as professor of Adult Education and Co-operative Studies with the Coady International Institute at St. Francis Xavier University. In 1971 he was named Senior Advisor, Co-operative Housing, Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. He retired in 1974 but remained active as a consultant on co-operatives and rural development for agencies such as CIDA, and as a prolific writer, speaker and lecturer. Dr. Laidlaw presented a major study on "Co-operatives in the Year 2000" at the International co-operative Alliance Congress in Moscow in 1980.
