Fonds consists of Boeschenstein correspondence, 1963, speeches, n.d., 1952-1954, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1973, and newspaper articles, n.d., 1955-1973, as well as copies of minutes, reports and correspondence on the work of the Young Men's Christian Association with German prisoners of war and internees in Canada, n.d., 1940-1950. Also included are copies of minutes of meetings of the Canadian Society for German Relief, 1947-1952, and publications and other material relating to its work and to German life in Canada in general, n.d., 1947-1954.

The fonds also includes two radio broadcasts for Swiss Radio by Boeschenstein in 1972. One broadcast concerns the 90th anniversary of the Royal Society of Canada and the other, in German, is about American speculators buying Canadian land.

Boeschenstein, Hermann, 1900-1982 : Hermann Boeschenstein, university professor, born in 1900 at Stein-am-Rhein, Switzerland went to Italy to work as foreign correspondent for a German-language Swiss newspaper shortly after he received his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Rostock in 1924. After criticism of the fascists got him into difficulties with the Italian government, he left Europe for Canada, in 1926. Here he took a variety of jobs, including work as a harvester on farms in Western Canada and as labourer in Vancouver. In 1927 he returned to Switzerland to get married.

Later in 1927 he returned to Canada and settled in Toronto where he was working as a laboratory assistant and translator when he was offered a position with the University of Toronto Department of German. He remained with the University until the beginning of the war when he was granted leave to take a position with the International YMCA to work with German prisoners of war and internees in Canada. After the war he returned to his teaching position with the University of Toronto, and was Professor of German and Head of the Department at University College from 1956-1968.

In addition to his teaching and other work Boeschenstein wrote short stories, served as commentator on Canadian events on Swiss radio and as Foreign correspondent for Swiss German-language newspapers. Through his work with German prisoners of war and internees he became active in German community life, in particular the Canadian Society for German Relief.
