Fonds consists of personal diary and notes, 1923-1930, personal documents and programmes, two letters from W.L. Mackenzie King and Wilfrid Laurier, poetry compositions and manuscript for play, photocopies of clippings. Fonds also consists of photographs, 1915-1967, that depict activities of Lyon Cohen and his son Horace Cohen.

Cohen, Lyon, 1868-1937 : Lyon Cohen, businessman, community leader, was born in Poland, 11 May 1868, the son of Lazarus and Fanny (Garmaise) Cohen and emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1869. Lazarus Cohen became one of Canadian Jewry's greatest figures and Lyon inherited his father's mantle of leadership, becoming one of the great leaders of the community. A man who had a deep sense of commitment and responsibility, Cohen was the founding President of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1919.

He served as President and in other executive capacities of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, the Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada, the Shaar Hashomayim Congregation, the Jewish Colonization Association, the Baron de Hirsch Institute, the United Talmud Torahs of Montreal and the Montefiore Club. In 1897 he co-founded with S.W. Jacobs The Jewish Times, Canada's first Anglo-Jewish newspaper (available on microfilm in the National Archives Library).

A well known industrialist and businessman, Cohen was the President of the Freedman Company, one of Canada's largest wholesale clothing manufacturers, and president of the Clothing Manufacturers' Association of Montreal. He died on August 15, 1937.
