Fonds consists of correspondence received by members of the Schmalz family, 1851-1949, genealogical notes, and Schmalz family records. Also included are a speech by William Oelschläger on the occasion of the Second Musical Festival in Berlin, Ontario, 1875; an election poster addressed to German voters by William Oelschläger, 1878; and an account book of the William Oelschläger store, photocopy, 1854-1857. The fonds contains maps showing Rupert's Land, 1858; the region explored by Dawson and his party, 1857-1858; the Canadian Pacific Railway route from Montreal to Manitoba, 1875; the Assinniboine and Saskatchewan exploring expedition, n.d.; an Ottawa city map, 1878; and rivers in western Canada, n.d., 1859. The fonds also contains photographs of a skating rink on Gaukel Street decorated for a Kermesse, Berlin (Kitchener), Ont., [ca. 1905].

Schmalz, William Henry Eugene : William Henry Schmalz was active in the Kitchener community as a leader in such fields as music, the militia, and business. As a member of the Board of Trade he was encouraged to enter municipal politics and became Mayor of Berlin in 1911. He was general manager of the Economical Fire Insurance Company and in 1915, joined W.J. Morris in the management of the Berliner Journal. William H. Schmalz married the daughter of William Oelschläger.

William Oelschläger operated a store in Lancaster, Ont., between 1854 and 1857, and after entering the insurance business in Berlin, Ont., became involved in the social and political life of the local community.

William Henry Eugene Schmalz, son of William Henry Schmalz, was a graduate of the Royal Military College. He married Beatrice Richardson. William H.E. Schmalz was the architect responsible for the design of the new Kitchener City Hall which was built during the 1920s.
