The fonds consists of diaries concerning Sallans' service with the York and Simcoe Battalion, doing garrison duty along the lines of communication of the North West Field Force, dated 29 March - 21 July 1885, plus copies of regimental orders, accounts, and related papers, 1885, 135 pages; letters received from relatives and friends, 1885, 41 pages; miscellaneous items, n.d., 1880, [1885], 3 pages.

Also included in the fonds is one photograph depicting the personnel of the York and Simcoe Battalion bathing, probably in Dead Moose Lake near Humboldt, Northwest Territories, 29 May 1885.

Sallans, Thomas : Thomas Sallans of Alliston, Ont., soldier, was a sergeant in No. 9 Alliston Company, the 35th Battalion of the Simcoe Foresters. Upon the outbreak of the Northwest Rebellion, various companies from the 35th Battalion and the 12th Battalion of the York Rangers were formed into a composite unit designated as the York and Simcoe Battalion. Sallans served in No. 2 Company of the Battalion. During the course of the rebellion, the York and Simcoe Battalion was engaged in garrison duty along the lines of communication of the North West Field Force and was not present at any of the battles of the rebellion.
