J. (Simon James), 1820-1902 : Simon J. Dawson born in Scotland, immigrated to Canada as a young man and became a civil engineer. As a member of the Canadian exploring expeditions sent to the Northwest in 1857 and 1858, he surveyed a water and land route from the head of Lake Superior to Fort Garry. In 1868, the Macdonald Government decided to act on his recommendations and Dawson was appointed to supervise construction of the route to Red River, now known as "The Dawson Route". He was subsequently involved in treaty negotiations with the Saulteaux Indians who inhabited the region. Dawson represented the area in the Ontario Legislature from 1875 to 1878 and in the House of Commons from 1878 until 1891, as a Conservative.
