Item is the reminiscences of Sir Hugh Allan, a reading, presented to a meeting of the Young Men's Association of St. Andrew's Church of Montreal in February 1880. The period from 1826 until ca. 1850 is covered in most detail.

Allan, Hugh, Sir, 1810-1882 : Hugh Allan was born in Scotland, the son of a shipowner. He came to Canada in 1826 and secured employment with a dry goods merchant. In 1831 he joined John Millar and company, shipbuilders and brokers, and in 1835 he became a partner in the firm. Subsequently, he was joined by his brother, Andrew, and the firm eventually became the Hugh and Andrew Allan Company. Initially, their principal activity was to act as an agent for their father's ships, but later they formed their own shipping company. In time, their company, the Allan Line, achieved a leading role in transatlantic commerce.

Allan prospered and developed his interests. He helped to found the Merchant's Bank in 1861, and eleven years later he formed a company to secure the charter to build a railway to the Pacific. His immense wealth gave him a heavy impact on many aspects of Canadian life at the time. His political activities resulted in the decline of the political influence of Sir George Cartier in 1872 and in the fall of the governement of Sir John A. Macdonald during the Pacific Scandal in 1873. He was created a baronet in 1871.
