The fonds consists of material which documents the theological education and missionary career of Rev. James S. Stewart. It consists of theological notebooks while attending Knox College, 1873-1874; correspondence and memoranda, 1872-1885; and miscellaneous documents relating to Rev. Stewart's ministry at Union Church (White Mud River, Manitoba), 1876-1888, including parish registers.

The fonds also includes lantern slides on astronomy, archaeology of the holy lands, and Presbyterian missions in Canada and abroad.

Stewart, James S., 1840-1918 : Rev. James S. Stewart, Presbyterian minister, (1840-1918), born in Inverness-shire, Scotland, came to Canada with his parents at the age of 14. He was educated at the Indian Lands School in Kenyon Township, Glengarry County, Ontario. Having decided to go into the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, he did his preparatory studies at the University of Toronto, 1869-1871, and his theological training at Knox College in Toronto, 1872-1875. After his graduation from Knox College in 1875, he went in the same year to Palestine, Manitoba as a missionary, and was ordained by the Manitoba Presbytery, 9 August 1876. After several years in Manitoba, he moved to Fort Erie and remained in Ontario for some years before going on to missionary work in Quebec. He was at Kennebec Road, Marlowe, Quebec, 1902-1917. He died at Ottawa, 1 January 1918, at the age of 78.

Historique de la conservation :

The register of baptisms, marriages and burials kept by Rev. Stewart at the Union Church in Manitoba, was transferred in 1971 from the Dept. of Energy, Mines and resources, through Dr. R.P. Riddinough of Ottawa, Ontario. This register was previously placed in MG9 E5-3. The remaining material was received in 1972 from Dr. R.P. Riddinough.
