Collection consists of a microfilmed notebook containing notes on mathematics, geometry and cartography, including the Transit of Venus and surveys of Nova Scotia, [ca. 1769-1771], microfilm reel M-5498; a commission appointing Thomas Wright, George Burns and Alexander Fletcher to execute the office of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Island of St. John, 1785, (photocopy, 2 pages); and a letter from John Wentworth, Governor of Nova Scotia, to Thomas Wright, 1797, original, 5 pages.

Wright, Thomas, ca. 1740-1812 : Thomas Wright was educated at the Royal Mathematical School of Christ's Hospital, London, 1755-1758. He spent some time surveying in Georgia about 1758 and produced a map of Georgia and Florida in 1763. He was appointed principal assistant to Samuel Holland in 1764 and participated in surveys of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1769 he observed the Transit of Venus from the Isle aux Coudres and spent the next several years assisting J.F.W. DesBarres in surveys of Nova Soctia and neighbouring areas.

His later career was spent as Surveyor General of Prince Edward Island, 1773-1812, as well as in several other government offices there.

Note générale :

The notebook was copied in 1980 from the microfilm held by the Provincial Archives of Prince Edward Island; the original is held by George Wright of Sherwood, P.E.I. The commission was transferred in 1971 from MG 55/23, #12. The letter was received in 1969 from Mr. J.G. Alley of Vancouver B.C.
