Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, legal records and related papers of William Dummer Powell, his descendants and their families. The fonds consists of following series of textual records: Correspondence, 1724-1832; Land papers and legal records, 1789-1834; Historical and autobiographical notes of W.D. Powell, 1806, 1807, 1813; Miscellaneous papers, 1789-1891, photocopy, 1812, and n.d.,1805-1807, 1891, transcript; Correspondence and estate records, 1714-1924; Genealogical notes and miscellaneous papers, 1718-1883.

The fonds also contains a photograph of William Murdon Jarvis, [ca. 1865].

Powell, William Dummer, 1755-1834 (family) : William Dummer Powell, a native of Massachusetts, was Chief Justice of Upper Canada, 1816-1825. He was admitted to the bar of the Middle Temple, London,in 1779 and settled at Quebec until appointed judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the Hesse (later, Western) District in 1789. He was raised to the Court of King's Bench for Upper Canada in 1794.

His daughter Mary married Sanuel Peters Jarvis and his grand-daughter Mary married William Botsford Jarvis, a family connection which is reflected in the papers. Grant Powell (1779-1838) married Elizabeth Mary Hurd, daughter of Samuel Proudfoot Hurd and Frederica Wynyard.

Note générale :

Most of the papers, volumes 1-4, were received in 1952 from Colborne Powell_Meredith of Ottawa, Ont.; other items had been received in 1922 and 1935.
A further series of papers were received in 1971 from Alan Powell of Ottawa, Ont., and from Robert M. Powell of Brockville, Ont. who have retained ownership; as well as literary and publication rights of the papers.

Note sur le classement :

The papers received in 1971 from A. and R.M. Powell have been arranged in series similar to those of the permanent collection but have not been incorporated into its organization.
