Fonds consists of funeral records of Steeles-College Memorial Chapel, consisting of Statement of Death forms and related invoices for each deceased Jewish person for 1949 and for 1951 to 1975. There was no formal record keeping before 1949. The records were arranged alphabetically before microfilming. Information provided on each form includes: name, dates and places of birth, death and burial, age, occupation, civil status and last residence, next of kin, names and birthplaces of parents. This material is located on microfilm reels M-6833 to M-6840.

Steeles-College Memorial Chapel : Since the beginning of organized Jewish life in Toronto in 1849, the community has maintained its own chevra kadisha, a group of volunteer men and women who undertook the responsibility for the care and burial of the dead according to Jewish religious (halachic) law.

With the dramatic increase in the Jewish community's population in the early twentieth century, it became necessary to establish the chevra kadisha on a more formal basis. Therefore, in 1927, it applied for and received a provincial charter under the name of the Toronto Hebrew Funeral Parlour with Elias Pullan as president. The Parlour was run as a co-operative with surplus funds from funerals distributed to community charities. Ten years later the Parlour acquired its own building at 331 College Street, where services were held. In 1947, the name was changed to the United Hebrew Funeral Parlour and in 1954 to College Memorial Park.

In the mid 1970's, the College Memorial Association was formed, separate from the Chapel. Profits were now channeled from the Chapel to the Association for charitable distribution. In 1977, with the Jewish population then exceeding 120,000 and migrating to the northern suburbs the Association purchased the Steeles Memorial Chapel on Steeles Avenue West which had been built two years earlier. The name was changed to Steeles-College Memorial Chapel. In 1983, there were 53 community organizations and synagogues affiliated with Steeles-College, which has a Board of Directors composed of representatives elected by these organizations.
