Item is a memorial from Sir Edward Dering and associates to the Earl of Middleton, Secretary of State, praying that steps be taken to induce the French government to restore property seized from the Hudson's Bay Company.

Middleton, Charles Middleton, Earl of, 1649?-1719 : Charles Middleton, the second Earl of Middleton was born in 1649 or 1650 was the eldest son of John Middleton and his wife Grizel. At the time of the restoration he was appointed by Charles II as envoy extraordinary at Vienna. Middleton became privy councillor and joint secretary of Scotland in 1682 and in 1684 was named privy councillor and secretary of state for England. Middleton became the Member of Parliament for Winchelsea in 1685. In 1688 he unsuccessfully advised King James II against fleeing. Middleton remained in England but was apprehended for high treason in 1692. Upon his release he joined the King in exile at St. Germain and become his chief advisor. In 1701 he was created the Earl of Monmouth by James Edward, the Old Pretender. Middleton was also responsible for the abortive expeditions of Prince James to Scotland in 1707. In 1713 he resigned the office of secretary of state for England and returned to St. Germain. Middleton died in 1719. Henderson, Thomas Finlayson. "Middleton, Charles."
