Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada : The Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada was one of the earliest organizations which actively collected and promoted the preservation of the archival heritage of Canadian Jewry. It established an office in Winnipeg which was concerned with protecting the archives and promoting an awareness of the Jewish History of all of Western Canada, including British Columbia. In January 1999, the Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada amalgamated with the Marion and Ed Vickar Jewish Museum of Western Canada and the Freeman Family Foundation Holocaust Education Centre to become the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada. The Jewish Heritage Centre is now performing all the functions of the Museum, Holocaust Centre, and Historical Society combined, to continue to preserve the Heritage of the Jewish people of Western Canada.

Historique de la conservation :

A large part of the Society's collection of archival holdings consists of the records of the Western Division of the Canadian Jewish Congress and of the Western Office of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services. In 1975 the Public Archives of Canada and the Society agreed that these records would be lent to the Archives for sorting, arrangement and microfilming of the material of national significance. The material has been filed and filmed in two separate blocs, the records of the C.J.C. followed by those of the JIAS.
