Fonds consists of minute books, 1899-1973; letterbooks and correspondence, 1898-1943; reports, 1900-1962; Israel's Tenth Anniversary, 1958. There are twenty microfilmed files of correspondence and reports of the Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada and the Zionist Organization of Canada, 1898-1951, microfilm reels K-88, K-89, K-107 and K-108. In addition, the minute books, 1899-1913, are available on microfilm, reel C-10458.

The fonds also contains photographs of tenth anniversary ceremonies celebrating Israel's nationhood, which took place in Montreal and Ottawa; photos by Photo Illustrations of Canada and Capital Press Ltd., 1958.

Zionist Organization of Canada : Organized Zionism has a long tradition in Canada. The first Zionist society was established in 1898. Shortly thereafter other societies were formed in Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Vancouver and smaller centres across Canada. In 1889 the societies united together to form the Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada, (F.Z.S.C.)

Initially the F.Z.S.C. collected funds for the purchase of land in Palestine. Shortly after the Balfour Declaration on Nov. 2nd, 1917, in which the British Government promised the Jewish people a national home in Palestine, the F.Z.S.C. began an active campaign to raise funds for all types of projects in Palestine and promote the Zionist cause among co-religionists and the Canadian public. The first executive director was appointed in 1917. In 1925 the Z.O.C. succeeded the F.Z.S.C. as the official voice of Zionism in Canada.

The Z.O.C. continued the work of the F.Z.S.C. and initiated many new projects. In 1927 the Z.O.C. purchased Emek Hepher for Jewish colonization. Annual campaigns were conducted for Keren Hayesod, the Jewish National Fund and United Palestine Appeals across Canada under the Z.O.C.'s auspices. In 1934 the official organ of the Z.O.C., the Canadian Zionist began with A.M. Klein as editor. In 1967 the Z.O.C. became a constituent member of the Canadian Zionist Federation. Its head office moved from Montreal to Toronto. The Z.O.C. has followed the centre of the road in the political spectrum of Zionism.

Some of the leading figures who have served as President include Clarence De Sola, 1899-1919; A.J. Freiman, 1919-1944; Samuel Zacks, 1946-1952; Edward E. Gelber, 1952-1956; Michael Garber, 1956-1958; Lawrence Freiman, 1958-1962 and Joseph N. Frank, 1962-1964.

Note générale :

The originals and photographs were transferred from Dr. George Liban, Executive Director, Rabbi D. Monson, President, the Executive of the Zionist Organization of Canada. The microfilms were received from the Central Zionist Archives, Jerusalem.
It should be noted that some volumes of correspondence and reports were reproduced by the Z.O.C. in the early 1960's from microfilm received from the Central Zionist Archives, Jerusalem. In other volumes, files of correspondence with the government of Canada were reconstituted using photocopies of government records in the Public Archives. This was done in the early 1960's.
