Fonds consists of Holy Orders appointing Cartwright a Deacon in the Church of England, dated 2 March 1828; and a letter from John Strachan to Cartwright giving personal and family news, dated 8 January 1839. Originals.

Cartwright, Robert David, 1804-1843 : Reverend Robert David Cartwright was born the son of important Kingston, Ontario businessman, military leader and politician Richard Cartwright and Magdalen Secord of Cataraqui (Kingston, Ont.). Rev. Cartwright was one of eight children, four of whom died at early ages.

Rev. Cartwright's appointment as Deacon of the Church of England occurred on 2 March, 1828. He married Harriet Dobbs on 21 November, 1832 in Dublin, Ireland and they had five children. Rev. Cartwright and his wife emigrated to Kingston on 5 June 1833 and became the newest members of the town's founding families.

In Kingston, Rev. Cartwright became an Anglican minister in 1832 - 1833 and, in addition to his religious work, worked with John Machar (Machir) to endow day schools in the Midland district for the benefit of those who could not afford the usual fees. Rev. Cartwright also worked closely with John Strachan, both clergymen of the Church of England. Strachan was also an important member of Kingston's community.

Only 11 years after his marriage and emigration, Rev. Cartwright died on 24 May, 1843.
