Item is a lengthy letter from Francis Maseres (1731-1824), Attorney-General of Quebec, 1766-1769, to the Rev. John James Majendie, giving an account of the state of religion in Quebec, deploring the appointment of a Roman Catholic bishop, and outlining a plan for gradually weaning the population from its Roman Catholicism, dated 28 May 1768.

Majendie, John James, 1709-1783 : The Rev. Dr. John James Majendie was the son of Andre de Majendie, a Huguenot of Bearn who left France as a result of the revocation of the edict of Nantes and became a naturalised British subject in 1700, after a few years' residence in Holland. J.J. Majendie took Anglican orders and received the degree of D.D. from Archbishop Cornwallis at Lambeth in 1769. He became a prebendary of Salisbury and attained a canonry at Windsor in 1774. He appears to have taken considerable interest in the French clergy in Quebec who took Anglican orders.

His elder son, Henry William Majendie (1754-1830) became Bishop of Chester and Bangor.

A typescript of the letter is also available, 29 pages. These copies contain numerous minor errors, and an omission of six lines at the end of f. 143 and beginning of f. 143v; they can be usefully used, however, in conjunction with the microfilm copy of the original in the Fulham Papers ( MG 17 B 5, vol. 1, ff. 120-160; on reel A-1028).
