In-studio interview of federal New Democratic Party leader Tommy Douglas in Vancouver. He speaks about federal versus provincial juresdiction, his hope to see social and economic democracy as well as political democracy, his serious concern about the American domination of Canadian industries; and the Watkins Report (a government task force report released in February 1968 and formally entitled Foreign Ownership and the Structure of Canadian Industry). Douglas advocates full disclosure of U.S. industries investing in Canada. He wants Canadian manufacturers to take over the processing of raw materials, eventually buying out existing U.S. industries in Canada. Douglas says economic growth will help alleviate the problems of unemployment and housing shortages. The elements of his strategy for economic growth are an investment board to direct private capital and a Canadian development corporation through which the government would mobilize capital. Douglas wants the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) discontinued and defence spending reduced. The money thus saved should be used to support United Nations peacekeeping forces and foreign aid. In Douglas' view, debates on the constitution are used to avoid dealing with real issues. He states that it would not matter if the Liberals or Progressive Conservatives won the 1968 election because they are like "Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee", having similar economic policies.
