Pinhey, Hamnett Kirkes, 1784-1857 (family) : Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey (1784-1857) was born at Plymouth Dock, Devonshire, and educated at Christ's Hospital, London. He became a partner in a merchandizing and shipping business, whose ships regularly ran the French blockade during the Napoleonic wars. Pinhey himself served as a king's messenger and carried despatches overland to Berlin. After the war, he sold his business and, in 1820, immigrated to March Township in Upper Canada, where he received an estate of 1000 acres in recognition of his valuable wartime services. He was a leader, and unofficial banker, of the community and became a member of the Legislative Council, 1847-1857.

The Pinhey house at Horaceville (named after Hamnett K. Pinhey's eldest son) was the first recommended to the nation for purchase in 1959 by the National Capital Commission.
