Fonds consists of twelve letters from Whittaker's College friend, John Rolph (1793-1870), Upper Canadian lawyer, physician and politician, son of Dr. Thomas Rolph (d. 1814) who immigrated to Upper Canada ca. 1810. The letters, 1812-1821, include reminiscences of Rolph's student days at St. John's College, Cambridge; remarks on the American Indian; a discussion of the conduct of the War of 1812; his financial losses due to the War; his paymastership to the militia of the London District; his medical and legal studies in Upper Canada, 1814; his legal studies in England, 1817-1821; his desire to enter the church, 1821; and a few mentions of his parents and sisters.

Whittaker, John William, b. ca. 1790-1854 : Minister of religion

John William Whittaker was an English divine educated at Bradford grammar school and St. John's College, Cambridge. He obtained first class honours in the mathematical tripos at Cambridge University in 1814, and became a fellow of St. John's in the same year. About 1819 he was appointed examining chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who presented him to the important vicarage of Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1822. He was nominated honourary canon of Manchester in 1852.
