He was a successful merchant, a founder of the Halifax Banking Company, 1825, and a member of the Council of Twelve in Nova Scotia, 1831. In 1838, he established the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, the predecessor of the Cunard Line, and pioneered steam navigation.
