Fonds consists of Lockhart's journal which describes his first visit to Canada in 1853. Included in the volume are accounts of his trip from Glasgow, the Atlantic voyage to Boston, a stay in Montreal, and a two month tour of the principal towns of Canada West. Lockhart had letters of introduction to prominent men across the colony and considered large-scale farming as well as business opportunities there, pp. 1-81. A letter from Lockhart on board the Europa, 20 July 1853 to his fiancée, Annabella Wilson, pp. 82-87, and two poems: "Oh! Can You Leave Your Native Land?" and "The Emigrant's Farewell", pp. 88-90, are also found in the fonds.

Lockhart, Robert A., 1832-1904 : Robert A. Lockhart, the son of John Lockhart and Lily Arthur was born in Glasgow in 1832 and educated at Glasgow University, where he won a prize in Botany. Following his 1853 visit to Canada, he married Annabella Wilson in 1857 and immigrated to Canada. In 1860, however, Lockhart returned to Glasgow where he started a business; in 1870 he moved to Edinburgh and worked at the Waverly Oil Mills for twenty years. Lockhart was an active volunteer soldier, Justice of the Peace for 20 years, and an elder in the United Free Church. He was a prominent committee member and a City Councillor from 1900 until his death in 1904.
