Association for the Review of Canadian Abortion Laws : The Association for the Modernization of Canadian Abortion Laws (AMCAL) was established in Ottawa in 1966 by Lore Perron, its first president. The association sought to lobby the federal government for the liberalization of the abortion laws and to elevate public understanding of such issues as abortion, birth control, and sex education. AMCAL also provided counselling and referral services for pregnant women. The association had members in several provinces, and branches were established in Toronto and Hamilton. Organizational problems, however, led these branches to disaffiliate in 1972.

AMCAL changed its name to the Association for the Repeal of Canadian Abortion Laws (ARCAL) in 1970, and adopted its present name, the Association for the Review of Canadian Abortion Laws (ARCAL) in 1971.
