They founded their own union, the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers. Following the forced resignation in 1961 of George Brooks, the union's reform-minded Director of Research and Education, reform elements held a meeting in Denver, Colorado. Attended by Canadian and American members, this meeting formally established the Rank and File Movement for Democratic Action (RFMDA).
The RFMDA soon created its own administrative structure, and was supported by a per capita tax from participating local unions. In the aftermath of the defeat of the reform programme at the 1962 International convention, several of the Western Canadian local unions in the RFMDA seceded to form the Pulp and Paper Workers of Canada. The RFMDA effectively disbanded in 1964, when many local unions withdrew to form the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers.
In 1972, the IBPSPMW merged with the United Papermakers and Paperworkers to form the United Paperworkers International Union. In 1974, the Canadian members of this new union withdrew and established the Canadian Paperworkers Union (CPU). In 1992, the CPU merged with two other unions to establish the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP). In 2013, the CEP merged with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) to establish Unifor.Information additionnelle :Note générale :The microfilm was received from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin Library, Madison, Wisconsin, in 1983.Note sur l'emplacement des originaux :The originals are in the possession of the Canadian Labour Congress and State Historical Society of Wisconsin.Groupes de documents reliés :For related materials, see Canadian Paperworkers Union (CPU) fonds (R9077 / MG28-I484), the successor to the IMPSPMW.Vedette-matière :- Trade-unions - Canada - Records and correspondence, 1903, 1954, 1958-1965 Union Democracy in Action, 1962, 1965
