In 1875 the Dolphin Club of Toronto was formed, and the following year saw the establishment of the Montreal Swimming Club. Before the founding of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association (CASA) in 1909, competitive swimming in Canada was governed by a committee of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada.
In addition to speed swimming, the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association administered through committees the related sports of water polo, diving and synchronized swimming. In 1950 the latter sport established its own body, the Amateur Synchronized Swimming Association of Canada (later known as the Canadian Amateur Synchronized Swimming Association), although a close institutional affiliation with the CASA was maintained.
A perceived need for greater autonomy led to the complete disaffiliation from the CASA in 1970 of the synchronized swimming, water polo and diving groups and to the establishment of new national associations for diving and water polo. A new umbrella organization, the Canadian Federation of Amateur Aquatics (which became the Acquatic Federation of Canada in 1974) was created to co-ordinate the four national aquatic associations and also assumed the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association's traditional role of representing Canada in the Fédération internationale de natation amateur.
In the wake of increased government and privately raised funding, the 1970s witnessed a considerable expansion in the activities of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association. Swimming in the 1970s became a sport in which Canadians consistently excelled in international competition. Functions and interests of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association after the 1970 re-organization include: arranging programmes for training and competitions; the development of coaching and the technical aspects of swimming; education; funding and grant programmes; the Canadian national swimming team; and liaison with government and with other sports and non-sports groups. In 1985 the Association's name was changed to Swimming/Natation Canada.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in several accessions, 1978-1985, from the CASA, and in 1993 from Swimming/Natation Canada.
