Stewart, second mate of the expedition under the command of William Wakeham, dating from June 3rd to September 15th,1897. The expedition was charged by the Canadian government with reassessing the period during which the Hudson Strait was navigable (ice-free) as well as asserting the Canadian rights to Baffin Island and the Arctic Archipelago. This second part of the expedition's mission was fullfilled on August 17th by proclaiming Canadian sovereignty over these territories at Kekerton, Baffin Island.
In the log of the SS Diana one can find the following entry from August 17th, 1897: "Still lying at anchor surveying the Island the British flag hoisted by Commander Wakeham on the highest part of the Island where the settlement was." Also in the log there are references to the dangers that the crew encountered when stuck in the ice in late June and early July and the preparations made in case they had to abandon the ship.
The fonds includes also the logbook of a previous voyage of John E.
