In the early 1950s, coinciding with mining development in the Schefferville area, the Naskapi residing at Fort Chimo (now Kuujjuaq) relocated to live near Schefferville, initially settling in an encampment at Pearce Lake. Around the same time, ca. 1955, Innu (formerly Montagnais) from Sept-îles relocated to Lac John on the outskirts of Schefferville, Quebec. In 1957, the Naskapi living around Pearce Lake were relocated by the municipality of Schefferville to live with the Innu from Sept-îles at Lac-John. The settlement at Lac John was later established as a reserve in 1960. Circa 1968 a second reserve, Matikemosh, was established at Pearce Lake for the Naskapi-Montagnais community at Lac-John. Following the James Bay and Northern Québec agreement, in 1980, the Naskapi chose to relocate and establish the new site of Kawawachikamach, becoming the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach. The community still located at the Lac-John and Matimekush reserves are known as the Innu Nation of Matimekush-Lac John.Source of title:Title assigned by Library and Archives Canada.Series added entry:09-34-00-00Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG10Other accession no.:1976-281 NPC -
