This sub-series includes manuscripts written by Jacques Castonguay on military history and military institutions. It is divided into as many sections as there are themes, i.e. thirteen. The author discusses some battles such as those of the St. Lawrence and Dieppe during the Second World War and some institutions such as the Royal Military College in Saint-Jean, Fort Saint-Jean and the Canadian Forces Base Montreal. He was also interested in the history of military units including the Régiment de la Chaudière, the Voltigeurs de Québec, the 5th Canadian Light Artillery Regiment and 16 Wing. He also wrote a history of chaplaincy in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In addition, the author has compiled several originals and copies of his articles and texts in the folder titled "Articles de revue, conferences et textes" (Review articles, conferences and texts). The topics are varied and also cover leadership in the military forces, Rwanda, the militia, the Royal Military College, defence and sovereignty issues in the event of Quebec's accession to sovereignty, and psychology. The folder includes an index. Finally, the sub-series includes Gabriel Taschereau's manuscript about his memories as a pilot during the Second World War.
Other documents testify to Jacques Castonguay's activities within the Canadian Armed Forces, particularly when he reports visits to several radar stations scattered throughout the Canadian Far North. These manuscripts are unpublished except for "Le leadership dans les Forces canadiennes" (Leadership in the Canadian Forces), which has been translated and published in English. Three of these studies are original accounts of military life in isolated northern areas during the 1960s.
Most manuscripts are accompanied by the reference documents that the author has collected. They include the author's personal notes, reports, lists, correspondence, memos, articles, press clippings, etc. Many of these reference documents are copies. Finally, it should be mentioned that the historical study of the Farnham military establishments does not include a manuscript.
The sub-series also includes iconographic documents. It includes a collection of 192 black and white photographs of the Chaplaincy service of the Royal Canadian Airforce, monstly from the Second World War (illustrations from his book « Unsung Mission » published in 1968), and some from the Chaplain Branch's beginnings after the Unification of the Canadian Forces in 1968; 7 photos relating to the 5th Canadian Light Artillery Regiment; 54 photos and 12 negatives relating to the Régiment de la Chaudière (portraits of commanders, group photos, decorations); 119 photos and 2 negatives concerning the history and activities of the Royal Military College in Saint-Jean (reproductions of paintings, maps, inauguration of the College in 1952, General Montgomery's visit in 1953, graduations, commanders, former students, the College), some of which were published in the book "Le Collège militaire royal de Saint Jean"; 115 slides of the Royal Military College Saint-Jean (aerial photographs, activities, archaeological research carried out in 1980 and 1981 on the site of Fort Saint-Jean) ; 10 photos and 1 aerial photograph of the Dieppe Raid in 1942 ; 11 photos of the Battle of the St. Lawrence in 1942 ; A manuscript on the history of the Canadian Forces Base Montreal and of its garrisons with 92 photographs ; 17 photos taken at the launch of two volumes on the Fort Saint-Jean in 1965 and 1975 ; and 40 photos and 7 negatives relating to the Voltigeurs de Québec (the Regimental Museum, the armoury, coat of arms, portraits, former internment camps at St-Blaise or Grande Ligne, and Farnham).
Finally, the sub-series contains 4 prints based on drawings by R. Tanguay and several cartographic documents: a plan and a copy of an aerial photograph depicting the port of Dieppe for the year 1942; two plans (one copy) showing the military establishments of Farnham; 9 copies of plans showing the Fort of Saint John between 1748 and 1917.
There are reproductions of plans of Fort Chambly and Pentgouet, Ismthe de l'Acadie and Lake Champlain. These reproductions are kept in volume 12 of the textual documents in the fonds. They cover the period from 1670 to 1776.
