The album ranges in content from photographs of buildings and scenic views to family and studio portraiture.
The buildings include: Parliament Hill and Government Buildings (Eastern Block, House of Parliament, Western Block) and Government House, as well as views from the Peace Tower (Ottawa) and the Citadel (QC), inside the Parliamentary Library, St. Paul's Church, the Langevin Block, and Wellington Street. Several photographs can be linked with negatives within the Topley Studio fonds.
The scenic images include: Waterways and activities around Ottawa - Chaudière Falls, Canal Locks, and Rideau River, as well as Curres Rapids and Cascades in Gatineau, Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake (Northern ON), Autrain Lake in Michigan (USA), Wotsowqua River and Homathco River (B.C.), Calumet Rapids (QC), Niagara Falls (ON), the Portage High Falls in Liévre (QC), Cape Trinity, Saguenay (QC), St. Marguerite River, and the Montreal Harbour and Warf in QC. Several of the photographs can be linked with negatives within the Topley Studio fonds.
Portraits include : Mrs. Topley Sr. (mother of John G. Topley), Mrs. Elizabeth Topley (wife of John G. Topley), possibly Miss May Topley and a couple of John George Topley himself. There are several photographs of each person, both in groups and individual portraits. There are also several unidentified children, and some prominent figures, such as, Hon. A. J. Majoribanks, Landsdowne and Lady Marchioness of Landsdowne (Maud, Evelyn Petty-Fitzmaurice), and photos attributed to Capt. John Sinclair and Major-General Sir Fredrick D. Middleton.
The loose prints consist entirely of individual portraits or group photos. The identified individuals include: Baby Jack Topley, Miss L. E. McGuire, John Topley (Jr.), Elizabeth Topley, Mrs. McElhinney, an old portrait of the Topley family from the Notman Studio and a class portrait from OsGoode St. School with both John Topley Jr. and his future wife Evelyn Burgess.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Topley, John George, 1850-1923 : John G. Topley (1850-1923), photographer. Born 22 Dec. 1850 in Alymer, QC. Following the death of their father, John Topley, the family moved to Montreal, ca. 1864, where he, along with his brothers Horatio and William, learned photography at Notman's studio. John G. Topley later moved to Ottawa in the 1870s and worked at Topley Studio in Ottawa founded by his brother, William James. John would later open his own studio at his own Ottawa residence, 164 Rideau Street, 1908-1923. Pulling back from the business in the early 1920s, John G. Topley died in 1923.Source:Private -
