1 drawingLanguage of material:no languageProvenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Hamilton, Augustus Terrick, 1818-1880 : Alexander Terrick Hamilton was born on 30 January 1818 in Chelsea, London, England, the youngest child of William Richard Hamilton (1777-1859) and Juliana Udny (1786-1847). William Richard Hamilton was a diplomat and antiquarian, and he was especially known for his work as secretary to Thomas Bruce, the 7th Lord Elgin (the senior Hamilton supervised the removal from Greece to England of the infamous artifacts now called the "Elgin Marbles"). The Hamilton offspring also included, in addition to Augustus Terrick, one daughter (Julie Elizabeth), and five additional sons. Among these brothers were the geologist, William John Hamilton (1805-1867), and the British Army general, Sir Frederick William Hamilton (1815-1890).
Like his older brother Frederick, Augustus Terrick Hamilton joined the British Army, enlisting as an ensign in the 71st Regiment of Foot (Highland Light Infantry) on 29 December 1835. Three years later in April of 1838, he was promoted to lieutenant. Embarking from England, Hamilton arrived at Quebec on 24 September 1840, on board the freight ship England. In November of 1842 Hamilton, formerly in the 1st battalion, succeeded as acting adjutant to the reserve battalion which had arrived at Montreal that September and was placed under the command of Major William Denny (1804-1886). He remained with the reserve battalion until September of 1851 when the now Captain Hamilton (he was promoted on 14 April 1846) was appointed aide-de-camp to the James Bruce, the 8th Lord Elgin and the Governor General of Canada of Canada from 1847-1854. Hamilton returned to England on urgent private affairs between 30 November 1853 and 30 June 1854. On his return to Quebec, Hamilton assumed the post of Military Secretary to the Governor General, which he retained until his departure on 22 December 1854, to rejoin his regiment in England. Hamilton sold his commission around 1858 and retired from the army. He then pursued a variety of business interests, serving on the board of directors of the Sun Life Insurance Company and the Anglo-American Telegraph Company. On 1 March 1880, Augustus Terrick Hamilton died at his home located at the Belgrave Mansions, London, England.Additional information:General note:Augustus Terrick Hamilton accompanied William Denny and party on a yachting trip up the St. Lawrence to the Saguenay River while on a leave of absence from 21 September to 15 October 1844.
