Collection consists of 22 preliminary sketches by John Hutton for the engraved glass panels commissioned in 1965 for the National Library and National Archives building at 395 Wellington, Ottawa. Subjects depicted include: Chaucer; Homer & Sappho; Tolstoy; Euterpe; Apollo, Clio; Champlain; Macdonald (two drawings); Baldwin and Lafontaine; Vancouver; Cartier; Shakespeare; study for Calliope; Goethe; [study of three standing female forms]; study for a muse [2 figures]; [study of Homer for Homer & Sappho]; study for the tablet [Assyrian with a cuneiform tablet]; [study for an early printing press]; [Dante]; study for Erato.

These works represent a sample of the preliminary sketches prepared for each of the 37 panels, for approval by the architects and planners of the NL-NA building project.

Custodial history:

Following the construction of the NL-NA building, some of the preliminary sketches were put up for sale by the artist. Some of the works making up this collection were acquired by the Public Archives of Canada through various auction houses, while others seem to have been purchased directly from the artist. Most of these acquisitions seem to have been made between 1967 and 1970.
