Each case file contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, and, in some cases, supporting charts and notes.
Since the bulk of the committee's correspondence, which can be found in the sub-sub-series under MIKAN 134616, was simply registered and numbered as it came in or was sent out, it is not clear why these items of correspondence were gathered together into discrete case files. Given that the folders are labelled, "Board of Railway Commissioners" it may be that they concerned issues that had to be referred to following the abolition of the Railway Committee of the Privy Council.
